Accompanied by 29 student volunteers, members of ‘Sun Love Marsiling Neighbourhood Link’ were given a treat on Friday, December 18, as they were brought out to visit Gardens by the Bay. This activity was part of an event organised by a group of Mass Communication student ambassadors from Republic Polytechnic (RP).

“The main objective is to inculcate compassion in our student ambassadors. Every year we will embark on one such event to do our bit for the community. Service leadership is important for one who aspires to be a leader,” said Ms Chan Yen Ting, one of the facilitating mentors.

Started in 2012, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities like these are part of the annual events organised by the student ambassadors in this diploma. The activity aims to provide the students with a platform to give back, in their own creative ways. One such event was the YOUths Care @RP: RP Rainbow Connection, where the beneficiaries were children.

Nurul Nadya Bte Zulkifli, a year 2 student who was also one of the organisers said: “We wanted to work with different groups of beneficiaries so that we can give back to different parts of the community and so we thought it would be good to serve the elderly this time round. We also wanted to have this event in December to go with the Christmas theme.”

With the Christmas theme in mind, the elderlies were brought to visit the ‘Flower Dome’ at Gardens By The Bay. They spent the day with their student volunteers admiring the Christmas trees and decorations, alongside the variety of flowers on display.

The event ended with a gift sharing session, where the elderlies were presented with a gift bag of daily necessities like detergents and medicated oils. Aside from that, they also received a special gift from each of their assigned student volunteers.

When asked about the importance of youths giving back to the society, Nadya said: “I think it's important for us to give back to the society as the society has provided so much for us. Organising and participating in events like these is the least we can do to show our gratitude.”

One of the challenges in writing the article was in ensuring that I was able to portray the article in a positive light. I also had to keep in mind the ethical issues when wanting to conduct interviews with the beneficiaries.
